DAVID PAYNE is eyeing the $1 million Golden Rose next month after the win of Magic Model in the opening race yesterday ensured he would have a two-pronged attack on the group 1."She's a very good filly, she has earned herself a crack at the Golden Rose after that," Payne said after the Glyn Schofield-ridden Magic Model wore down the favourite Gigas."I've already got More Than Great going to the Golden Rose, so they will be my two runners in the race."Magic Model has now won two on the trot and Payne believes she still has plenty of upside."That was a top effort today," he said. "She has to be a good filly to do that on a wet track carrying a big weight. She conceded the runner-up a handy bit of weight, as it had a claimer on. I think that adds merit to the performance of my filly."Payne said Magic Model would have a short break, which is also the case for More Than Great, before they returned to the stables to be aimed at the Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 29.BLOOMING HOPEFULDarley trainer Peter Snowden is another to be setting his sights on the Golden Rose with Lonhro youngster Denman Sydney-bound for the race. Denman maintained his unbeaten run since resuming when racking up a third straight win at start four in the MVRC Purrealist Inglis Bonus at Sandown."He is a nice horse, doing everything right," said Snowden, who was at Randwick overseeing his Sydney team.VINTAGE PERFORMANCEChris Waller closed in on his 60th city winner for the season when Vintedge staved off rivals to win the AJC Convention Centre Handicap, and the trainer immediately heaped praise on jockey Peter Robl."The ride won the race, simple as that," Waller said.Third on the Sydney premiership behind Gai Waterhouse and Peter Snowden, Waller has had a remarkable 81.5 second placegetters in town this season. "We've now had 57.5 winners, which has been great, but if some of those seconds had been turned into winners it would have been a vintage year," he said.Snowden has also trained more than 80 second placegetters this season but he had to settle for third in Vintedge's race with Tollemache.IT'S A BREEZEWarwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli's confidence was justified when Yoburg sprinted to victory in the Bacardi Breezer Handicap.Yoburg was soundly beaten at Rosehill last time out but Portelli changed the gear on the gelding, which proved to be a masterstroke."We added the Kyneton nose-band to his gear and it's made the difference," Portelli said. "The nose-band is made to stop a horse pulling and it worked for him."Yoburg was specked in the betting ring, with Portelli saying with a smile: "I hope we get something out of it."
